New Britain, Connecticut – National Honor Society students from
CREC's Academy of Science and Innovation recently undertook a heartwarming
initiative known as “Soctober.” Throughout the month of October, students
organized a sock collection drive aimed at providing essential items to
families experiencing homelessness.Recognizing that socks are among the most
requested yet often overlooked necessities in homeless shelters, the students
rallied their school community to collect new socks.
The initiative highlighted the critical role that clean, dry socks
play in the lives of homeless individuals. With many experiencing long walks
each day in search of food, medical appointments, and job opportunities,
worn-out footwear can lead to severe discomfort and health issues. The collection effort yielded an impressive total of 132 pairs of new socks, which
will be donated to the Family Shelter operated by the Community Renewal Team
(CRT) in East Hartford. CRT’s 40-bed family shelter provides a safe haven for
families while helping them access vital services.
“By collecting socks, our students have shown that small acts of
kindness can make a significant impact,” said Stacy O’Donnell, the NHS Advisor
at the Academy of Science and Innovation.“We are proud of our students’
commitment to supporting those in need within our community.” Students at The
Academy of Science and Innovation remain dedicated to fostering a culture of service
and leadership. Initiatives like “Soctober” are a testament to the positive
change they strive to create.
