Evelyn De La Cruz

The CREC Academy of Science and Innovation has been named a Magnet School of Distinction by Magnet Schools of America, the national association for magnet and theme-based schools.

The Academy of Science and Innovation is a whole-school magnet program dedicated to providing a diverse student population with high-quality STEM opportunities. The school is celebrated for its immersive approach to education, where the STEM theme is seamlessly integrated across all four core subjects—math, science, social studies, and English Language Arts—as well as specialized electives and STEM Pathways. Innovation is at the heart of the school's philosophy, driven by evidence-informed practices such as project-based learning, standards-based grading, and a dedicated full-time math instructional coach.

The school’s commitment extends beyond academics to a vibrant, inclusive culture where diversity is maximized through student-led councils, equity-focused curriculum units, and collaborative projects. Supported by a robust system of professional development, the Academy continues to garner awards for significant student and staff achievements, solidifying its role as a premier institution for future-focused learning.

Principal Karen Mooney expressed her excitement at this accomplishment. “Receiving this distinction once again is a proud moment for the Academy of Science and Innovation, affirming our ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality, integrated STEM opportunities for our diverse student population. This award celebrates our school’s dedication to innovative instructional practices and a culture of inclusivity that empowers every student to succeed."

To receive a national merit award, members of Magnet Schools of America must submit a detailed application that is scored by a panel of educators. These schools are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme.
